The Welsh Sale
There can surely be no doubt that we have now passed from the twentieth to the twenty-first century and the arguments as to whether the twenty-first century began on 1 January or 1 January can be put aside. Whichever date we favour for this significant transition, we might at least all agree that the period of change from one century to another, from one millennium to another, has shown itself somewhat predictably to have been a fruitful time for a discussion of the ends of the things.
It wasn’t until I started to prepare this talk that I discovered that there was a name for this phenomenon: endism 1 , and there is also a name for those of us who dwell deeply on finalities, passings, conclusions and the like. It seems that we are endists and that there are a lot of us about. You need not look far for evidence of this.
Try doing a search for ‘endism’ on the Internet and see what you get.

These markets made up around 15 percent of that region’s export pottery trade. pieces produced (some dated) in the at the Ewenny potteries in Wales.
Being a Welsh fair there will be a good collection of Welsh pottery, including Swansea, Llanelli, Glamorgan and, of course, those impressive early pieces of Ewenny pottery. One such piece of Ewenny on display will be a large pot which was actually made for the American market. In Gwyneth and Ieuan R Evans’ book on Ewenny pottery, it mentions the actual date of the shipment to N Parsons, Boston, Massachusetts being on November 5 and that one cask of vases was sent across to America.
It’s remarkable that the pot has survived over years, crossing the Atlantic twice and finally ending its journey not so far away from where it was first potted in the Ewenny pottery, by the great man himself, Jones of Bridgend. Glynda Speed and Terry Hiors will be standing at the fair and as always will both have some very interesting collections of Welsh pottery. A feature at the fair will be a stylised hand-painted South Wales Pottery cockerel plate which is said to be attributed to Sarah Roberts, or Aunty Sal as she was known.
There will also be a varied collections of Gaudy Welsh on display and rare Worcester pieces, such an exquisite Dr Wall teacup and bowl dating back to the first period, circa For the more discerning collectors there will be some rare pieces of Chinese porcelain on show, some dating back to the 16th Century. Roger Tanner returns to thefair with an exciting collection of seafaring chests, boxes and gleaming brass compasses, bells and telescopes.
His collection will also include nautical maps and charts. There will also be some excellent displays of period oak and country pine furniture, alongside some fine antique silver, Staffordshire figures, jewellery, prints, paintings, postcards, toys, textiles, fishing reels, bottles, clocks, quality glass and ’60s retro items.
